Falcons dump Daniel, come back to beat Eastside in 8, and lose to Clinton

A.C. Flora’s Josh Hernandez went 2-for-3 from the plate with a couple of RBIs and two runs scored, and Charles Chapman pitched a five-inning complete game to lead the Falcons to an 11-1 drubbing of the visiting Daniel Lions in a Class 3A baseball playoff elimination game Wednesday, May 4.

Chapman allowed four hits and no earned runs while striking out four. Will Bethea went 2-for-4 from the plate with an RBI and two runs scored for the Falcons. Jonathan Hernandez and Lane Botkin had two RBIs each as well.

The Lions struck first when Quade Grisham scored from third on an A.C. Flora error in the top of the first, but that was it for Daniel.

The Falcons scored three in the second inning. Brendan Greene reached home on Jonnie Hernandez’s triple to right field. Hernandez then scored on Leighton Long’s single, and Long scored on Josh Hernandez’s infield single.

The Falcons took an 8-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Bethea knocked in Bailey Mathews with a single to center field. Josh Hernandez scored on Botkin’s sacrifice fly. Bethea stole home, and Tanner Bethea reached home on a passed ball.

A.C. Flora got its final three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Will Holstein was plated by Josh Hernandez’s double, and Hernandez later scored on an error. Bethea then stole home again to end the game.

The Falcons came back to tie the game in the top of the seventh and then got the winning run in the eighth to beat the Eagles 11-10 in a dramatic Class 3A playoff elimination game Thursday, May 5 at Eastside.

Photo by Jim Marczesky Josh Hernandez led the way for the Falcons going 2-for-4 from the plate with two home runs, four RBIs, and three runs scored. Brendan Greene was also huge as he went 2- for-5 with a home run, three RBIs, and a run scored. Lane Botkin and Will Bethea each went 2- for-4 from the plate. Botkin had an RBI and a run, and Bethea had a run scored for A.C. Flora.

In a game full of heroes, Will Holstein came up big for the Falcons in the end. He went 2-for-5 from the plate, but his final hit scored Jonnie Hernandez for the winning run. Holstein also pitched the final two innings striking out one, walking none, and giving up one hit to earn the win.

The Falcons grabbed the early lead with three in the top of the first. Josh Hernandez led off with a home run, and Greene plated Bethea with a single. Botkin then scored on Jonnie Hernandez’s single.

The Eagles responded with two in the bottom of the inning and then took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the third.

Josh Hernandez put the Falcons back on top in the top of the fourth with a three-run blast over the center field fence. The Eagles got one back to make it a 6-5 game after four complete innings.

The Falcons scored three more in the top of the fifth with Greene’s two-run bomb over the left field fence, and Leighton Long came home when Botkin was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

A.C. Flora’s 9-5 lead held until the bottom of the sixth when the Eagle offense exploded for five runs.

Facing a 10-9 deficit and their final three outs, the Falcons went to work. Josh Hernandez walked and then stole second base. Bethea singled to left field, and Hernandez took third. Botkin then hit into a double play, but Hernandez was able to take home and tie the game at 10-10. Eastside went down in order in the bottom of the seventh, sending the contest into extra innings.

In the top of the eighth, Jonnie Hernandez reached on an error. With one out, Long sacrifice bunted to advance Hernandez to second. Holstein then ripped a single to center field plating Hernandez for the winning run.

Holstein then got Eastside to pop up twice, and he struck out another in the bottom of the eighth for the win.

Clinton 7, A.C. Flora 6

Clinton scored three runs in the final two innings to knock off the A.C. Flora Falcons 7-6 and advance to the Upper State Championship bracket Friday, May 6.

The Falcons opened up a 4-0 lead in the opening inning and a half. It started when a single by Coleman Pope brought Josh Hernandez home for a 1-0 first inning lead.

In the second, A.C. Flora tacked on three more runs. First, Watts Eaddy scored when Will Holstein reached base on an error. Holstein later scored following a single by Hernandez.

Botkin accounted for the final run of the inning, when he walked, scoring Leighton Long for a 4-0 lead.

The Red Devils got three runs back in the bottom of the second and one in the bottom of the third to tie the score.

A.C. Flora regained the lead in the top of the fourth. A triple by Hernandez scored Tanner Bethea. Hernandez later scored on a fly out by Will Bethea for a 6-4 lead.

Clinton responded with one run in the bottom of the fifth and two in the sixth for the win.

Josh Hernandez led the way for A.C. Flora, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Coleman Pope went 2-for-4 driving in one run; and Will Holstein went 2-for-3 accounting for one run.

Baker Cox picked up the loss throwing 3-1/3 innings for the Falcons. He gave up five hits, three runs, and struck out one batter. Trey Holmes pitched 2-1/3 innings giving up four runs and three hits, while striking out one batter.
